Mosaics
Unlike the makers of most traditional mosaics, I do not utilize grout. Instead, I meld individual pieces until they become tightly joined, relief compositions of ceramic and glass. I take particular inspiration from two seemingly unrelated sources: the 6th century Byzantine basilicas of sacred iconography in Ravenna, Italy – with their exacting grids of tiny gold-infused glass tesserae; and Antonin Gaudi’s 19th century clay mosaics – wildly organic, color-drenched fantasies of modernism in Barcelona, Spain. In recent work, I incorporate photolithography on clay of my past mask art for an unexpected effect.
